Why people go guided in Québec and the Gaspé
The Gaspé Peninsula is a coastal drive with some of the most scenic roads in eastern Canada, and it is a regular stop on longer eastern tours. A guided trip is useful if you are not comfortable driving in French, want local interpretation or like the idea of a group travelling the long coastal loop together.
The route
- The coastal loop around the peninsula on Route 132 passes small fishing villages, lighthouses and sea views.
- Forillon National Park at the tip, and Percé Rock and Bonaventure Island on the southern side, are highlights.
- Many tours connect the Gaspé with Québec City and the Maritimes, so check how many nights are in Québec.
Language and driving
- Signs are in French, and distances and speeds are in kilometres.
- Learn the basic traffic signs and words for fuel, roadwork and detour. Your leader may help, but you are driving.
- Ask whether excursions are bilingual, and whether the leader speaks French.
Ferries
Société des traversiers du Québec ferries cross the St. Lawrence at several points and are used on some eastern routes. Fares and reservations depend on the crossing, so ask whether any are on your itinerary and who books them. See ferries and vehicle size.
Season
- Summer is the main season. Many attractions and some campgrounds close in the fall.
- The coastal weather is changeable. Bring layers and rain gear.
- Fall-colour tours exist, but check which services remain open.
Tours to compare
Adventure Caravans publishes day-by-day itineraries that include the Gaspé and the Maritime Provinces, with published examples of about 32 to 63 days. Fantasy RV Tours lists long eastern itineraries, and some Atlantic programs include Québec nights. Compare the number of nights actually in Québec, and what is in the price.
Questions to ask
- How many nights are in Québec, and in which towns?
- Is the Gaspé loop driven in the RV, and what are the longest drive days?
- Are excursions and tour leadership bilingual?
- Which ferries, if any, are on the route?
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to speak French to travel in the Gaspé?
Not necessarily. Many tourism businesses speak English, but road signs are in French and a few words help. A tour may include a bilingual leader.
How many days does the Gaspé take?
It depends on the tour. Ask for the number of nights in the Gaspé, not just the tour’s total days.
Is the Gaspé suitable for big RVs?
Many RVers drive it, but some stretches are narrow, and campgrounds vary. Ask the operator about maximum rig length.
