Why people go guided in Atlantic Canada
Atlantic Canada rewards a slow trip, and it is full of ferries, tides and small campgrounds with short seasons. The region is also very popular with caravans, because the routes are well-travelled and the scenery is compact: Cabot Trail, Bay of Fundy, PEI beaches, lighthouses and fishing villages. Newfoundland adds a long ferry crossing and a whole extra region.
What is actually in the tour
"Atlantic Canada" is not one product. The first thing to find out is how many provinces are covered and how many nights are spent in each. A three-province Maritimes tour is a different purchase from one that adds Newfoundland, Québec or both.
| Scope | What it usually covers | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Maritimes only | New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island | Whether Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail are included, and whether you drive it in your RV |
| Maritimes plus Newfoundland | Adds a ferry from North Sydney and a week or more on the island | Which ferry route, who books it, who pays length supplements |
| Gaspé and Maritimes | Adds Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula | How many nights in Québec, and the language of excursions |
| Long eastern tours | Several provinces over six to nine weeks | Nights in each, rest days and the pace of drive days |
Ferries
- North Sydney to Port aux Basques: up to 21 ft $57.12; 21–30 ft $86.33; 31–40 ft $122.21; 41–50 ft $157.92.
- North Sydney to Argentia: up to 21 ft $121.81; 21–30 ft $184.08; 31–40 ft $260.01; 41–50 ft $335.89.
- Cabins from $126.50 (two-bed, Port aux Basques) and $176.75 (two-bed, Argentia). Pet-friendly cabins cost more.
The published 2027 Maritime program from Adventure Treks mentions a ferry base fee, with extra ferry charges that may depend on RV length. Ask any operator how the supplement is calculated from your full rig length. More in ferries, borders and vehicle size.
Route highlights
- New Brunswick: Bay of Fundy and its tides, covered bridges, Fundy National Park.
- Nova Scotia: the Cabot Trail loop on Cape Breton, Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg, the Annapolis Valley.
- Prince Edward Island: red-sand beaches and the Confederation Bridge. The bridge and Northumberland ferry both affect planning.
- Newfoundland: Gros Morne, the Viking Trail to L’Anse aux Meadows, St. John’s and the Avalon Peninsula. Distances are long and services are further apart than on the mainland.
Season
- Most tours run from early summer to early fall. Fall colour tours exist in the Maritimes, but some campgrounds and attractions close after Labour Day or Thanksgiving.
- Fog and wind can affect ferry crossings and coastal driving.
- July and August are busy and campgrounds fill. Shoulder-season tours are quieter but not every service is open.

Questions to ask
- Does the itinerary actually include Newfoundland, or only the three Maritime provinces?
- Which ferry is used, and is it booked for the RV, occupants and any towed vehicle?
- Who pays length or cabin surcharges, and how are they calculated?
- How many nights are in Newfoundland versus Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI?
- Is the Cabot Trail driven in the RV or visited by coach?
- Are group meals, attraction tickets and free days clearly marked?
Frequently asked questions
Is the Newfoundland ferry included in caravan tours?
Sometimes. Some operators include a base ferry fee, and some leave length supplements and cabins to you. Ask exactly what the fee covers for your rig length.
How long does a Maritimes caravan take?
Published examples range from about three weeks to several weeks, depending on whether Newfoundland, Québec and the Gaspé are included. Compare nights in each province, not just the total.
Can a large RV do the Cabot Trail?
Many RVers drive it, though some stretches are narrow and winding. A guided trip may include it as a coach excursion, so ask whether you drive it.
