Timing decides how crowded the campgrounds are, which roads and ferries are open and what you will pay. This guide gives the practical season for each major caravan region.
Season at a glance
| Region | Main season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian Rockies | June to September | July and August are busiest. Snow is possible at high elevations in any month; wildfire smoke can affect summer travel |
| Alaska Highway and Yukon | June to August | Thaws from late May and cools in September. Long daylight in midsummer |
| Atlantic Canada | Late June to early October | Fall-colour trips exist, but some services close after Labour Day or Thanksgiving |
| Newfoundland | July to early September | Ferry schedules and the Argentia route are seasonal. Check Marine Atlantic |
| Gaspé and Québec | June to early October | Coastal weather changes quickly; many attractions close in the fall |
| Calgary Stampede | Early to mid July | Scheduled for July 9 to 18, 2027 |
| Vancouver Island | May to September | Summer ferries and west-coast campgrounds are busy; the island is wet in the cooler months |
Peak summer
July and August bring the best weather and the longest days, and the biggest crowds. Campgrounds, ferries and park lodging book out, and prices are higher. A guided tour in these months is often the easiest way to secure campsites.
Shoulder seasons
June, early September and early October can bring quieter campgrounds and lower prices, along with changeable weather. Check which services and attractions are open, because some close right after Labour Day and some national park services reduce. Fall colour tours in eastern Canada can be spectacular.
Weather and wildfire
- Wildfire smoke in western Canada can affect air quality and close roads or parks. Ask your operator for a reroute policy.
- Mountain weather changes quickly. Carry warm layers and check forecasts and road reports.
- Coastal fog and wind can disrupt ferries. Build a day of slack into ferry itineraries.
- Insects. Mosquitoes and blackflies can be intense in early summer in the north and in some forests.
When to book
- Popular tours fill months ahead; ask when departures are confirmed.
- If travelling independently, reserve national park sites and ferries as soon as booking windows open.
- Service your RV well before departure; shops book out in spring. See our repair directory.
