RV Caravan Tours

Travelling with Pets

Questions, fares and rules.

Pets can be a great part of an RV trip, and a real problem on a tour if nobody thought it through. This guide covers the questions to ask and the practical details.

Ask the operator

  • Are pets allowed, and are there limits on number, size or breed?
  • Are group events, restaurants and coach excursions pet-friendly, or will you need to leave the pet at the RV?
  • What are the leash and noise rules on the tour?
  • If a stop prohibits pets, what are the alternatives?

Ferries

Checked October 2026. Marine Atlantic offers pet-friendly cabins and pet kennels. Fares are one way in CAD, from the rate pages in October 2026.

Pet carriers are not provided, and kennel size and availability vary by vessel. If you plan to use a kennel, ask how the ferry handles pets who are anxious, how often you can visit, and how to plan the crossing for a long sailing.

Parks and campgrounds

  • National parks generally require pets to be on a leash, and many areas restrict pets.
  • Many private campgrounds have breed or size limits and quiet-hour rules.
  • Wildlife (bears, elk, cougars) is a real hazard to pets in the Rockies and the north. Keep pets on a leash and do not leave them outside unattended.

Crossing the border

Dogs and cats entering Canada may need proof of vaccination, and rules differ for puppies, kittens and different animals. Check the CFIA and CBSA pages and your vet before travel, and carry the paperwork. See our border crossing guide.

Heat and safety

  • Never leave a pet in a parked RV without proper cooling and monitoring.
  • Carry water for pets on long drive days and rest stops.
  • Bring your vet’s phone number and a list of emergency clinics along the route.
  • Fit a microchip or ID tag with a phone number that works on the road.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog on a caravan tour?
