Canadian Rockies RV Caravan Tours

Banff, Jasper and the Icefields Parkway, with real fees.

Mountain campsites are scarce, roads are tight and weather changes fast. This guide explains where a guided Rockies trip adds real value, and what to check before you pay.

Why people go guided in the Rockies

The Canadian Rockies are the most popular guided RV destination in Canada, and the reason is logistics rather than scenery. Campsites in Banff, Yoho, Jasper and Waterton are limited and release months ahead. Roads are narrow in places, parking at lakes and viewpoints is tight for large rigs, and a mountain storm or wildfire can close a road with little warning.

A guided trip is worth paying for if the operator solves those problems: reserved campsites in or near the parks, coach excursions to the busiest sites so you do not need to park a large rig at Moraine Lake or Lake Louise, and a leader who knows when to adjust.

The core route

Most itineraries are variations of a loop out of Calgary or Edmonton, linking:

  • Calgary, Banff and Lake Louise (the Trans-Canada corridor)
  • The Icefields Parkway to Jasper, a 232 km mountain road with limited services; fill your tank at Lake Louise or Jasper
  • Jasper, and Yoho or Kootenay on the way back, or onward to the BC interior
  • Optional: Waterton Lakes in the south, or a cross-border extension to Glacier National Park in Montana

Ask for the number of nights in each place. Many "Rockies" tours spend a lot of time in Calgary and on the Prairies. If the mountains are the point, count the mountain nights.

National parks, passes and fees

Checked October 2026. Fees below are from the Banff National Park fees page (last modified February 2026) and the Parks Canada Discovery Pass page.
  • Daily admission: adult $12.25, senior $10.75, youth free, family/group $24.50.
  • Commercial group: $10.42 per person per day. The Discovery Pass is for independent travellers only and is not valid for commercial groups. If you join a tour, the tour is normally paying group admission on your behalf. Ask whether park fees are in the price.
  • Discovery Pass for independent travellers: adult $83.50, senior $71.50, family/group $167.50.
  • Camping for one night: Tunnel Mountain full service $47.25, Tunnel Mountain electrical $40.00, Lake Louise electrical $40.00. A reservation fee of $11.50 online ($13.50 by phone) applies. Fire permits are extra.
  • Camping, hot springs, guided programs and reservation fees are not covered by admission or the pass.

Season and weather

  • June to September is the main season. July and August are busiest and most expensive.
  • Snow can fall at high elevations in any month, including along the Icefields Parkway. Carry layers and check road reports.
  • Wildfire smoke and closures occur in summer. Ask how the operator reroutes and whether campground fees are refunded.
  • Daylight is long in June and July, which helps drive days.

Tours to compare

Alberta and Glacier National Park (Fantasy RV Tours)Published as a 14-day example that links Calgary and the Stampede with a cross-border trip into Montana. Check exactly which park visits, excursions and campsites are included
Canada Land & Sea (Fantasy RV Tours)Published as a 40-day example covering western Canada and Vancouver Island. Not comparable to a short Rockies-only tour
Adventure Caravans and Adventure TreksBoth publish longer western or Alaska–Canada combinations; compare how many nights are in the Rockies
Fresh Adventures guided campervan formatA hosted campervan concept rather than a traditional own-RV caravan. Its published page included old dates, so confirm current departures directly

Questions to ask

  • How many nights are in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, and how many are in towns outside the parks?
  • Are campgrounds inside the national parks, and what are the maximum rig lengths?
  • Is the Icefields Parkway driven in our RVs or by coach?
  • Is Glacier National Park in the U.S. part of the route, and what documents are needed? See crossing the border.
  • How are wildfire closures and smoke reroutes handled, and are fees refunded?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to camp in Banff?

Banff’s fee page lists nightly campground fees such as $47.25 for Tunnel Mountain full service and $40.00 for electrical sites, plus a reservation fee. Daily park admission is separate. Fees are updated periodically, so check Parks Canada.

Can I use my Discovery Pass on a guided tour?

No. Parks Canada says the pass is for independent travellers, not visitors in commercial groups. Guided tours normally pay a commercial group fee on your behalf. Ask whether it is included.

When should I book Rockies campsites?

Reservable national park sites release months ahead and popular dates fill quickly. On a guided tour, the operator reserves them, which is one of the main reasons to go guided.
